Occasional Table for the TV room

A larger table for my wife & I to use in our recroom between our 2 recliners, was needed badly! The last one just didn't have enough room for all those "remotes", newspapers, TV Guides, coffees and snacks etc. etc., so I decided to make a new one, incorporating into the unit, holders for the remote controls and a place for the newspaper to fit, yet be kept readily at hand. The bottom shelf which as you can see is accesible from both sides, is a nice feature so that both my wife and I can easily get to it.

I kept in mind the design of the existing table but I made a few changes to the design and this is what I came up with. The table is made from 3/4" oak veneer plywood and all of the exposed plywood edges have been banded with 1/2" strips cut from a 1" oak board, which were attached with finishing nails and glue. The heads of the finishing nails were recessed with a nail set and the holes filled with matching oak wood filler from Lee Valley Tools. Before applying, the outer edges were rounded over with a 1/8" roundover tool.

Both the table top and bottom shelf are 27" long by 19" wide.

Both the newspaper rack and the remote rack are made from solid oak and are sized to fit both the the newspaper and remotes exactly.

The unit is held together with recessed 1 1/2" #8 screws the holes for which have been counter bored and filled with the slightly tapered plugs which I cut from oak scraps with my plug cutter purchased from Lee Valley Tools. The tapered plugs insure a snug fit!

The project was finished with 4 coats of MinWax Polyurethane semi-gloss varnish and although it is not in place in these photos, the top is covered with a custom cut piece of polished edge 3/16" glass to protect the top from the heavy use it will get.
