"The design is pretty much out of my head. I built the "passenger compartment" from 5/8" exterior fir plywood. It is about 36" long by 14" wide, glued and screwed at the joints. All edges were bevelled and sanded, then 4 coats of varathane/varnish were applied.
Initially I had planned to use a set of metal runners salvaged from an old "store-bought" sleigh. Something made me re-think this and lean toward wood. My wife suggested possibly recycling pieces from a beat-up wooden toboggan (which of course I had kept around - never know when you might use part of it for who knows what).
This proved to be the perfect solution. I disassembled the toboggan, selected two of the best strips, cut them to length for the new application, then cut them narrower (to about 1-1/4 inch) so they would cut the snow without "floating". I attached the runners to the vertical rails using glue and screws. The front curls of the runners come up and are joined together using a channelled wooden strip. This strip meets the front of the passenger compartment and is attached with 2 more bolts. The entire sleigh component is also liberally coated with varathane/varnish. The rope was added last."
The passenger compartment is attached to the sleigh frame with 4 bolts, so in the Spring/Summer/Fall it can be installed on a wagon (upcoming project!).
